20th August 2016

The National Summertime Ball is a brand new event for Kilkenny, which started in order to raise much needed awareness and funds for different chosen charities each year. This year, the ball is delighted to work with Diabetes and Scoliosis.

Both of these conditions are shrouded in misconception, and part of our aim is to bring both conditions into the public limelight. The general view is that Diabetes is caused by excessive sugar consumption; however this is only partially true. Diabetes is divided into two categories: Type I and Type II. The popular understanding of diabetes relates to Type II, whereby one consumes so much sugar that the body’s insulin, responsible for converting sugar to energy, simply ceases to function. To suffer from Type I diabetes, on the other hand, entails that the pancreas is simply unable to produce enough insulin for the body to function correctly. In both cases, this insulin deficiency can be equally dangerous, necessitating daily insulin injections simply to ensure the sufferer’s survival.

In contrast to diabetes, scoliosis is a condition which few know a great deal about. In its simplest terms, scoliosis is a pronounced curvature of the spine. Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common type of spinal deformity, idiopathic meaning the exact cause is unknown. In addition to the normal front to back curvature, the spine has an abnormal side to side "S" or "C" shaped curvature. The spine is also rotated or twisted, pulling the ribs along with it to form a multidimensional curve. Early intervention is critical and in a sense scoliosis is similar to diabetes because there are several effective treatments available. No cure has yet been developed, instead the symptoms can be treated through surgery or bracing. The nature of the treatment is, however, largely dependent on the severity of the condition.

As you can see, we are attempting to combat two highly debilitating conditions, each of which have a worrying prominence in Ireland alone. All proceeds from The National Summertime Ball will be donated to ‘Diabetes Ireland’ and ‘Straight Ahead’. These two charities have done sterling work for diabetes and scoliosis patients nationwide. Some of the funds raised will also go to the Kilkenny Diabetes Unit in St. Luke's Hospital.

The Ball itself will take place at The Hub, Kilkenny, on August 20th at 7.30 with a drinks reception followed by a 3 Course Gala Dinner, Fashion Show, Auction, Raffle and Live Music, to be performed by the inimitable ‘Perfect Day’

As you can see, this is one evening you would be mad to miss and tickets will be on sale shortly for €60 per person. Anybody looking to buy a ticket can do so from the website as soon as they become available.  More information regarding tickets will be announced in the coming weeks on our social media and website so keep an eye out.
