Declan O'Rourke

Declan O’Rourke has achieved critical acclaim for his songwriting, singing and performance. Jon Pareles of The New York Times said there was virtuosity in his guitar playing, with ‘intricately contrapuntal picking and meticulous dynamic,’ and that his calling was as a balladeer.
The debut single ‘Galileo (Someone Like You)’ has
been recorded and performed by many artists,
including singer Josh Groban who cut it for his album
Illuminations. Declan performed ‘Galileo’ at the 25th Anniversary Gala Celebration of Ireland’s National Concert Hall, at the opening ceremony of the 2011 Solheim Cup, and at the BBC-televised ‘Proms in the Park’ with the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast.

He has also performed at such festivals as Glastonbury, Oxygen, Electric Picnic, The Cannes Film Festival, Latitude, Cois Fharraige, and SXSW. Declan’s own shows have included The Paradiso Club, Amsterdam; The 100 Club, London; The Waterfront Hall, Belfast—his sold-out performance at Sydney’s Basement venue was broadcast on Australian TV’s ABC network.

Back in the studio!..New songs!..USA!..Vikings!.. Moone Boy etc..!

It’s hard to believe, but 28 years ago in 1987 in Galway, The Stunning were born. During the early nineties the biggest Irish band in the world was U2, but in Ireland it was The Stunning.

In the seven years that The Stunning were initially together, they toured relentlessly building up a following that would make them one of the most successful Irish bands ever. In 1990 their debut album ‘Paradise In The Picturehouse’ spent five weeks at number one and became one of the most-loved Irish albums of all time. Two years later, the follow up ‘Once Around The World’ also hit the No. 1 spot and the band went on to sell over 100,000 albums in Ireland alone.

During their time, the band enjoyed numerous Top 20 singles and scooped every music prize and award going. Irish radio & TV championed the band and they were rarely off the airwaves. The band frequently toured in the US and the UK and also supported the likes of Bob Dylan, The B52’s and the Waterboys.

Despite the passing of time, their popularity has never waned. Songs such as “Half Past Two”, “Romeo’s on Fire”, and “Everything that Rises” are still to be heard on the radio and have been
featured in movies and numerous compilation abums of the best of Irish rock. “Brewing Up A Storm”has become an anthem of sorts and is to be heard everywhere from football stadiums to clubs around the country where it is still a guaranteed floor-filler.

Ireland’s current President Michael D. Higgins is a huge fan and even guested on the band’s ‘Tightrope’ album and The Stunning supported him throughout his 2011 presidential campaign.

In the years that followed Steve and Joe formed The Walls, Derek joined The Sawdoctors, Jim joined Riverdance and Cormac played drums with everyone!

In 2003 the band reunited for the first time to promote the re-release of “Paradise in the Picturehouse” on The Walls Dirtbird Records label. The album sold out in the first three days, reaching No.2 and the tour that followed was one of the biggest in the country that year.

Their live shows, featuring all their hits, continue to be very much in demand.

Last year brought them to New York, Boston and further afield… There have also been extra-curricular activities going on in The Stunning camp. Steve has become a much in-demand actor and features in all three series of the Emmy Award-winning series “Moone Boy” for Sky Television. He also plays the scheming Einar in “Vikings” and he starred as a detective in the BBC’s acclaimed series “Silent Witness”.

Joe is now involved with BIMM Music College in Dublin, sharing his experience in songwriting, music production and performance with the students.

Guitarist Derek Murray works with comedian Tommy Tiernan and teaches recording in the west of Ireland.

Cormac Dunne is a renowned and in-demand session drummer, while multi-instrumentalist Jim Higgins is one of the top bodhran players in the country and curently plays with Christy Moore.

Paradise in the Picturehouse and Tightrope have been re-issued on Dirtbird Records and are available in record shops, from www.thestunning.net and from iTunes.
